Mormon Women call for action by people of faith to support humane and ethical means for immigrant family unity at border fence in Nogales, Arizona.

Nogales, AZ — People of faith will gather at the Protect Family Unity vigil at 6 p.m. Saturday. Held near the Nogales Placements Center that holds detainees and children from Central America, Honduras and Guatemala, the vigil will consist of music and stories illuminating the need for continued urgent action regarding U.S. immigration policy.

WHAT: The Protect Family Unity vigil will bring together families from throughout Arizona in support of immediate reunification of children separated from families who have fled violence and are seeking to improve their lives. The event, sponsored by the Arizona chapter of Mormon Women for Ethical Government, will include music in English and Spanish and stories from families in government custody and the inefficiencies and inhumanities of ‘zero tolerance’ criminal prosecution of all illegal entries. The public is invited to participate in this peaceful event.

“The leaders of our country must do all that is necessary to reunite families they have ripped apart,” said Andrea Dalton, head of MWEG’s Arizona chapter. “Every child must be returned to their loving parents, and no family fleeing war and peril should suffer these inhumane policies in our great country ever again.”

MWEG recognizes the need for the United States to protect its border and is not promoting any specific legislative action. The purpose of this event is to highlight the pain and suffering of those separated from families, both at the border and through deportations, and petition lawmakers to seek compassionate solutions as they approach immigration legislation.
