Official Statement From Mormon Women for Ethical Government on Impeachment Acquittal and Senator Rom

February 6, 2020 Yesterday’s vote to acquit the president marks a watershed moment in our democracy, and we now have the opportunity to determine what will come after. Will we allow our nation to be governed from extremes, or from a place of mutual respect and common values? The decision is ours to make.

Mormon Women for Ethical Government will continue to fight against the rank partisanship evident in both houses of Congress throughout this process. This partisanship has crippled legitimate impeachment proceedings and succeeded in obscuring truth. We will continue to fight against the corruption and self-interest that saddles our nation with immoral leaders who govern unchecked. We will continue to fight for the rights of citizens, civil servants, and elected officials to act from moral conviction and without fear of political retaliation. We will continue to fight for the free and fair elections that have made our nation great.

We will also move forward with increased clarity about the role individual citizens must play in the months ahead. The health of our democracy is now dependent on the collective action of countless concerned and well-informed citizens whose primary interest lies in defeating those seeking unfettered power, and in preserving the norms and laws upon which the republic rests. We encourage our fellow Americans to support and defend leaders, regardless of their party affiliation, who offer a vision of collaboration and adherence to the rule of law. We must use our vote to raise up new leaders who are willing and able to heal the breach.

There is hope as long as there are citizens willing to speak out and act. Senator Romney’s fearless choice should inspire us to persevere with similar courage and conviction. We must find each other. We must work together. We must fight for our common beliefs. Then, as individuals, we must ask ourselves what we are willing to put down in order to pick up and carry our democracy. We affirm that Mormon Women for Ethical Government will continue to amplify the voices of those speaking truth, and that our membership will work tirelessly to assure “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” We encourage all like-minded Americans to join us in this endeavor
