Official Statement from Mormon Women for Ethical Government on the Importance of Counting Every Vote

During the last six months, the women of MWEG have worked tirelessly to encourage voter participation in our democracy. We have asked women to be informed and principled voters, and to exercise this precious and hard-won right with a measure of responsibility and compassion. We, like so many others, have been inspired to see the overwhelming voter turnout in the days leading up to the election. This should renew our faith in the power of representative government.

As the election of 2020 draws to a close, we reaffirm our commitment to defend the basic principles underlying our democracy. We continue to believe that the surest pathway to peace and prosperity is a government of the people that functions within a system of stable and accountable laws and norms. As such, every eligible citizen should have the right to cast a vote, and every vote should be counted. None of us should be arbitrarily or capriciously denied the opportunity to express our will for the future.

We encourage all elections officials as well as local and state government leaders to resist pressure to disenfranchise voters. We must not rush to a resolution but instead ensure that every vote is counted. We must not allow long-standing processes of vote tabulation to be corrupted by partisan interests but instead insist that those processes retain their neutrality. The power and purpose of our nation are not circumscribed in one party or ideology; rather, they are a reflection of its citizenry, and the best expression of this power is our individual ballot. We ask that voters be prioritized and protected as they step forward in record numbers to make their voices heard.
